Cordelia is a true Super Mum! She has found her cape and her true calling whilst working around her family and six children. It was a pleasure to interview her and learn more about her business – a true inspiration and testament of what’s possible when you have the determination to make a difference.
Good morning Cordelia, If you could first of all introduce yourself and say a bit more about your background/life story.
It is because of my children that I started my business. After a rewarding accounting career, I decided to stay home with my children 12 years ago.
I had started my motherhood journey overcoming grief with the recent loss of both of my parents. Then the loss of friendships as I entered into my faith journey. My grief continued with each of my new choices, I chose to stay at home with my kids, then to home school, at some point I said to myself, “Enough with the Woe is me bit! My life does not suck and my choices rock!“
In the background, my husband did not support most of my choices or did so half-heartedly. So I created a way to insulate myself from all the negativity and create a safe space for my light and gifts to still shine. That was the beginning of the inner transformation.
About seven years ago, after years of being a leader in mom’s groups and freely giving advice to many moms, I decided to start a blog called Living in Harmony Motherhood. Why? Because I was pregnant with our fifth child. After having a perfect system that kept me centered and the household peaceful, I was worried that I could not maintain. I had to revamp my whole system to allow for one more. But it was almost three years ago when I was expecting our sixth child that I was determined to make it into a business. That was the birth of Workout Around My Day – you can read more about this in a recent blog: workoutaroundmyday.com/why-does-weight-loss-suck
Tell me a bit more about your business and how you first came up with the idea.
I decided to go into business to help other moms. So many had come to me for help and always encouraged me to start a business or to write a book. My blog became part of my book and my years of notes became the seven step process. Having an accounting and business background helped me with how to set up and track revenue and expenses, tax filings. However, pricing, pitching and marketing are all new skills. Self-development and inner transformation is continuing on a completely different level.
I have been funding my business out of our household budget and working as a virtual assistant at times.
What have been the best and worst things that have happened since you’ve been in business?
The best part of being in business and the worst thing are the same, I have found what I am truly made of.
If you could go back in time, would you change anything?
I would not change a thing and embrace everything as an evolution.
How do you fit in running your business with your family?
Both me and my husband work from home so we make sure to compliment each other’s meeting schedules accordingly.
Monday, Wednesday and Friday I work mornings and Tuesday/Thursday afternoon to early evening. Every other weekend I have workshops.
Who do you look up to in business?
I have met many amazing people on my journey so far, but I am not one for idols. However, in the online space there are three women who I greatly admire: Toni Henderson Mayers, Michele Charles Gustafson and Cynthia Bazin.
Are you a member of any networking groups or other associations which help support your business growth?
I am part of two Facebook groups Passion and Purpose Mastermind with Connie Ward and Peri10k Mastermind with Katya Varbanova and locally Empower women International.
